SENTINEL ISLAND TODAY

Sentinel Island Lighthouse continues to guide mariners along Alaska’s Inside Passage. The light is solar powered and maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1998 the lighthouse was leased to the Gastineau Channel Historical Society to preserve and provide public access. In 2004 the National Park Service selected the Society for transfer of ownership under the National Historic Preservation Act of 2002.

Volunteers have been rehabilitating the buildings and structures that remain at Sentinel Island. Funding has come from Historic Preservation Fund Grants offered by the Alaska Office of History and Archaeology, fund raising activities, and corporate and individual donations. If you would like to contribute or become involved contact the Gastineau Channel Historical Society.
